By default when a link is inserted into a page, it is a dofollow link, which means the robot or bots when crawl your site will also crawl the links which are found on a certain web page. This is a continuous process. Due to this, spamming was the issue which was raised, for getting more back links spamming was ignored by people." No follow " is the attribute which was designed to stop the spamming, the links when inserted to any web page having rel= "nofollow", the link will not be added to the database of the bots to crawl.

It also prevents the link juice not to flow away from the site

Well Google only consider DoFollow links for backlinks but Yahoo considers both Dofollow and nodofollow.

It was posted November 2009 so not that long ago. However you can get fresh dofollow blogs based on your "niche" (http://referralsecrets.blogspot.com/2010/02/high-pr-dofollow-blog-forum-edu-gov.html). Which are very helpful because it's time consuming finding good dofollow blogs and forums.

No-follow and do-follow attributes are actually explaining a certain link better. If you have rel="nofollow" attribute it will mean that your link will not be recognized by the search engines as a backlink. Unlike an article directory, most of the blog software comes with "nofollow" attribute automatically applied on any hyperlink in the comment system. However, this is something every blog owner can modify and in fact many blog owners have removed "nofollow" attribute on their blog comment system simply because they want to grant users and themselves a free backlink.

Advantages and disadvantages of No-follow and Do-follow attributes

The main advantage of a "nofollow" attribute placed on a forum or blog is that you will not have your hands full of posts or comments that need to be moderated. Less spam of course is another advantage and you can be assured that only people who are actually interested in your blog and the topic you write about will post a comment on it. On the other hand, if you allow you blog to have "do-follow" links you will surely have more visitors and your blog will be more popular, not to mention that every backlink counts in an overall calculation of your site's page rank.
