I never get this concept sorted out. As far as I'm knowledgeable, it's a unit rent in the data center?

But how is it any different from dedicated hosting servers? Is colocation managed? Maybe just managed in the hardware level rather than the software level?

Collocation means the co-occurrence of words placed next to each other. It is defined as the arrangement or juxtaposition of words that commonly occur together. Simply speaking, it is merely the grouping of words. When two words are used together as a common practice, rules are formed about their use, not because of any grammatical reasons but due to their association.

Just what he/she was looking for I'm sure!

When a data colocation company talks about "tiers", they are referring to the different levels of reliability they can offer for your server maintenance and storage. This grading system ranges from Tier I to Tier IV, with IV being the topmost reliability in power, cooling and availability. Prices can rise significantly based on the tier level offered by a data center. A government's intelligence department would use Tier IV, however most companies can benefit fine from a Tier I or Tier II system and get the most for their buck. Choosing the right colocation center based on tier performance can differ according to the operational needs of a specific company. For VoIP telephone services, it would be more important to make sure servers aren't going down for a few hours at unexpected notice since customers are heavily involved. For others, a basic Tier I will meet business needs while maintaining an economical balance for return on investment.

Collocation is moving or placing things together, sometimes implying a proper order. On the Internet, Collocation or colocation or co-location means the provisioning of space for a customer's telecommunications equipment on the service provider's premises. For example, a Web site owner could place the site's own computer servers on the premises of the Internet service provider (ISP). Or an Internet service provider could place its network routers on the premises of the company offering switching services with other ISPs. The co-location facilities offer the customer a secure place to physically house their hardware and equipment as opposed to locating it in their offices or warehouse where the potential for fire, theft, or vandalism is much greater. Most co-location facilities offer high-security, including cameras, fire detection and extinguishing devices, multiple connection feeds, filtered power, backup power generators and other items to ensure high-availability which is mandatory for all Web-based, virtual businesses.

A dedicated server is a computer in a network reserved or dedicated for serving a specific need. For example, a network may require that one computer be set aside to manage communications between all the other computers. A dedicated server could also be a computer that manages printer resources. In the Web or application hosting business, a dedicated server is a type of Internet hosting in which the client rents an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting. You are not sharing the system resources such as processor power, memory and disk space with other users on the same server. You do not run the risk of the server being slowed down, swamped with traffic, or crashed by another site on a shared server. As nobody else has access to the server you can be sure of having a much greater degree of security. If you need to install special software or configure the server to your own particular needs then often a dedicated server is the solution. Run your own custom firewall to enforce your own access control policy. Your dedicated server has its own unique IP address. More memory, disk space or extra processors can be added as the need arises.

Server colocation is an attractive option for individuals and small businesses that want all the benefits of having a popular website with tons of hits, but don't necessarily want to pay for the bandwidth that such popularity requires. They still pay a fee, but it isn't for bandwidth; it's a rental charge. A company will store all of its sensitive data — web pages and downloadables, for example — onto a server, and then physically haul the server to a different location. This location is the home operation center of the server colocation provider. Once the server is there, the provider will take over and install it in their rack.

A familiar grouping of words, especially words that habitually appear together and thereby convey meaning by association.

Collocational range refers to the set of items that typically accompany a word. The size of a collocational range is partially determined by a word's level of specificity and number of meanings

There is a great difference between colocation and dedcated server hosting.

Colocation: You get rack space, power, bandwidth and other data centre facilities. Ship you server to the DC and they rack it for you. Here the server hardware belongs to the client. In most cases this service is unmanaged. You get support only for the facilities provided by the provider. Other services would be considered as Advanced Remote Hands.

Dedicated Server: You can choose between managed and unmanaged services here. You get all the facilities like colocation and additional the server hardware is provided by the service provider. So if you face any hardware issues the provider will replace it for you. Mostly the software and applications are managed by the end customer, if they have not opted for fully managed services.

In colocation the datacenters provide you secure and reliable location for your IT equipment. All services are provided within the datacenter like cooling infrastructure, power supply backup, network connectivity, remote hands on service, etc.

Physical benefits: Usually the datacenter building has high security and all provide lockable cabinets or cages surrounding server rack.

Cooling systems: colocation facilities provide powerful air conditioning systems to keep the air appropriately cool and moisture-free.

Power back-ups: All colocation facilities have a power backup arrangement leading to no power failures. They also provide 99.99% uptime.

Economic advantages: Colocation is the biggest advantage for small scale business as it saves a lot of infrastructure cost

Maintaining the web servers at your own at a private place is a costly affair. Colocation services (https://www.host.co.in/colocation-hosting.php) simply means the services which allow you to move your server hardware to a place called Data Center which are mostly owned by web hosting services providers. Data Center is a place developed specially for maintaining the web servers with the best required infrastructure and environment.

Co-location (https://www.esds.co.in/colocation) refers to the way IT equipment and resources are located or installed. This usually refers to the networking hardware resources owned by an organization, such as Web or database servers, which are located outside the vicinity of the organization's premises and "co-located" with another organization's hardware, usually an ISP or a service provider. This is usually done because the ISP might be the best candidate for maintaining the Web server hardware for the organization and it would be better to keep the hardware in a more suitable place since ISPs have specially built places for networking hardware.
