What does a "reverse DNS request" mean? And what does it do on a VPS server?

This site does a reverse DNS lookup of an IP address by searching domain name registry and registrar tables. IP addresses are four numbers in the range of 0 to 255 separated by periods.

max server provider use google public dns

8.8.8.8
8.8.8.4

Not sure I understand the question the way it was meant: but please note that you (as data center, as IP net owner) can also set a rDNS (reverse DNS) entry for IPs -- usually done to the HOSTNAME of servers for the main IP or in case of domain hosting accounts with a dedicated IP done for that domain.

This is a tool to show what is set up there:
http://relays.osirusoft.com/cgi-bin/rdns.cgi

hi.
According to me Reserve DNS is the determination of the domain name which is associated with given ip address.

reverse DNS mapped an IP back to a hostname.
It is important that you setup reverse DNS for your VPS IP. Otherwise, you will see a lot mail bounces due to incorrect reverse DNS.

This is the correct answer for you in a simple manner. DNS helps you to point back to ip thus giving a better identity. If you set RDNS you can avoid other mail servers rejecting the mails and also can avoid getting blocked in blaclikst because of this single reason.

RDNS pretty much is a method to determine a hostname with it's associated IP. Some 'free email' providers like AOL, Hotmail sometimes rejects mail from a server if it doesn't have a RDNS Entry.

Reverse DNS is IP address to domain name mapping - the opposite of normal DNS which maps domain names to IP addresses.

Computer networks use the Domain Name System to determine the IP address associated with a domain name. This process is also known as forward DNS resolution. Reverse DNS is the inverse process, the resolution of an IP address to its designated domain name.

The use of the rDNS: network troubleshooting via tools such as traceroute, ping, and the "Received" trace header field for SMTP e-mail, web sites tracking users etc.

DNS is known as Domain Name System. Primary work of DNS is to resolve the host name to IP address.
DNS converts the machine names to IP addresses such as 199.249.150.9. Basically, it translates from a name to an address and from an address to a name.

Reverse DNS (rDNS) is a method of resolving an IP address into a domain name, just as the domain name system (DNS) resolves domain names into associated IP addresses. One of the applications of reverse DNS is as a spam filter. Here's how it works: Typically, a spammer uses an invalid IP address, one that doesn't match the domain name. A reverse DNS lookup program inputs IP addresses of incoming messages to a DNS database. If no valid name is found to match the IP address, the server blocks that message.

Hello All,

Why would you need a Reverse DNS set up for your DNS server? While it is not as necessary to have a Reverse DNS configured for your domain name as it is to configure a Forward DNS, you will get a better guarantee that everything is working hassle free online with a Reverse DNS set up for your host.

Reverse DNS (RDNS) determines what hostname is associated with an IP address. RDNS record is updated on the name servers of the service provider. The provider can either setup PTR records for you (or) incase you have your own name servers they delegate the entire IP block to your name servers.

In other uses, reverse DNS can be used to determine the real upstream of a reseller as well, thus many providers block reverse dns lookups for their resellers.

Reverse DNS is separate from forward DNS.
Forward DNS for "abc.com" pointing to IP address "1.2.3.4", does not necessarily mean that reverse DNS for IP "1.2.3.4" also points to "abc.com".

In case you didn't know, rDNS is implemented by having a zone made up from the IP backwards at the domain 'in-addr.arpa'.

So for example if your IP was 10.1.2.3 (which it wouldn't be because that is a private IP range) the zone would be:

3.2.1.10.in-addr.arpa

Yes, but it only makes works for domains with a *dedicated* IP. Just listing the hostname does not really work well here.

DNS, which stands for domain name system, controls your domain name's website and email settings. When visitors go to your domain name, its DNS settings control which company's server it reaches out to.

You may be able to identify the domain name of a spammer sending you spam email or the domain name of a computer trying to break into your firewall or someone trying to hack your system.

You may also be able to use this information to determine the name of the internet service provider assigned to a particular IP address

Reverse DNS" redirects here. For Java-like naming convention, see Reverse domain name notation.
In computer networking, reverse DNS lookup or reverse DNS resolution (rDNS) is the determination of a domain name associated with an IP address via querying DNS - the reverse of the usual "forward" DNS lookup of an IP from a domain name.

The process of reverse resolving an IP address uses the pointer DNS record type (PTR record).

Although the informational RFC 1912 (Section 2.1) specifies that "Every Internet-reachable host should have a name" and that "For every IP address, there should be a matching PTR record...", it is not an actual standards requirement, and not all IP addresses have a reverse entry.

Reverse DNS is IP address to domain name mapping - the opposite of forward (normal) DNS which maps domain names to IP addresses.

Reverse DNS is separate from forward DNS.
Forward DNS for "abc.com" pointing to IP address "1.2.3.4", does not necessarily mean that reverse DNS for IP "1.2.3.4" also points to "abc.com".
This comes from two separate sets of data.

A special PTR-record type is used to store reverse DNS entries. The name of the PTR-record is the IP address with the segments reversed + ".in-addr.arpa".
For example the reverse DNS entry for IP 1.2.3.4 would be stored as a PTR-record for "4.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa".

Reverse DNS is also different from forward DNS in who points the zone (domain name) to your DNS server.
With forward DNS, you point the zone to your DNS server by registering that domain name with a registrar.
With reverse DNS, your Internet connection provider (ISP) must point (or "sub-delegate") the zone ("....in-addr.arpa") to your DNS server.
Without this sub-delegation from your ISP, your reverse zone will not work.

Reverse DNS is mostly used by humans for such things as tracking where a web-site visitor came from, or where an e-mail message originated etc.
It is typically not as critical in as forward DNS - visitors will still reach your web-site just fine without any reverse DNS for your web-server IP or the visitor's IP.

However reverse DNS is important for one particular application.
Many e-mail servers on the Internet are configured to reject incoming e-mails from any IP address which does not have reverse DNS.
So if you run your own e-mail server, reverse DNS must exist for the IP address that outgoing e-mail is sent from.
It does not matter what the reverse DNS record for your IP address points to as long as it is there. If you host multiple domains on one e-mail server, just setup reverse DNS to point to whichever domain name you consider primary.
(e-mail servers checking for reverse DNS do recognize that it is normal to host many domains on a single IP address and it would be impossible to list all those domains in reverse DNS for the IP).

Special note about AOL:
It appears that AOL has recently restricted this even further:
They also require that reverse DNS points to a "fully qualified domain name" (we assume they mean a name with 3 or more segments, such as "mail.jhsoft.com"), and that this name does not contain the segments "in-addr.arpa" and is not just an IP address.
If you want to be able to send e-mail to AOL users, the reverse DNS record for your e-mail server IP address must adhere to this as well.

In computer networks, a reverse DNS lookup or reverse DNS resolution (rDNS) is the querying of the Domain Name System (DNS) to determine the domain name associated with an IP address – the reverse of the usual "forward" DNS lookup of an IP address from a domain name. The process of reverse resolving an IP address uses PTR records. The reverse DNS database of the Internet is rooted in the arpa top-level domain.

A reverse DNS lookup takes an IP address and returns the domain name associated with that IP. A forward DNS lookup does just the opposite.

The Reverse Lookup tool will do a reverse IP lookup. If you type in an IP address, we will attempt to locate a dns PTR record for that IP address.
