Alot of people search for hosts with Urchin, so I can only assume they're good too.

I am finding that Status2k is the best status script I have ever seen! I highly recommend this.

Does anyone know of an off-the-shelf package that allows people to track banners, visitors to pages, etc. in standard HTML pages?

I have had a query from a HostSearch visitor who believes in HTML web pages and as a result does everything manually with an editor like Dreamweaver, etc. The results are good – their site is high in the rankings – but they are having a problem with advertisers. Obviously advertisers are looking for reports on visitors per month, number of times a banner is clicked, etc. but of course it gets difficult to produce a unified report because of their HTML approach.

I heard of something that would allow you to put code onto a banner, page, etc. that would pick up visit details… but that’s all I heard. Apparently it uses Java. Is there anyone who has heard of such a package or something similar?

I use Google analytics and awstats, and on some test sites which are hosted on free web hosts I use w3counter. I also have webalizer installed but I really hate it.

Awstats for me as well. I've only just found out about Google Analytics, and use it on most my sites.

Awstats has to be one of the best stats scripts ive come accross, excellent breakdown of data transfer and visitor statistics aswell as key word tracking.

If you use awstats make sure you have them all pass protected, having the latest version 6.6 doesnt hurt either, its stable. I cant belive they wont offer a patch for their older versions just say their 6.6 is secure.

AWStats is not bad indeed. I use webalizer stats on some of my sites, but I don't like it much.

Awstats is full of info, graphically better, more accurate stats and more widely used.

Webalizer is comparatively simple yet gives you what you need.

AWstats work with server log. To analyze server logs I use Weblog expert lite ( http://www.weblogexpert.com/lite.htm ). It is good piece of software if you need quickly analyze your log files. They also offer 2 versions with more features (Weblog expert lite is for free, standart version cost $75 and profesionall version $125).

For more detailed statistics I use google analytics. These statistics are not only more detailed but also more accurate - in your log files may appear some ping requests. These ping requests are usually done by spammers (unless you use server uptime monitoring service) - so called referrer spam. You will see their website in your log file like referrer and visit it. But such spamming doesn't appear in google analytics stats because spammers don't visit your site, they only use the ping.

Awstats is a nice stat software however they didn't receive new releases for a quite long time. At the same time we see that Google launched their analytics and many other good stat software emerged. I think that Awstats should release a new version soon if they want to keep theyr popularity and market share.

For my own website I use AWStats with my own IP address excluded
I also recommend it to customers
For the server stats I use text based information

I have also tried Google Analytics but I found gaps and some information not included

I do agree with most of web masters here. Logs based statistics is the most exact one.

To get some free webhost I am using Google analytics and awstats. I use w3counter also. I also have webalizer installed. But I don’t like it.

I generally use Google analytics or awstats. But while working on few test sites that are sometimes hosted on free hosts I prefer using w3counter. I do have webalizer but I dislike it.
