One of the most important decisions you will make is choosing your Web hosting service. Web Hosting Service is the companies that give you space to host your Web pages on a Web server, making them available to anyone who knows your URL. Small Web sites (around 15-20 pages of content) do not need much more than 1 or 2 MB of server space to hold all of the HTML pages and graphics. Web hosting services provide Web server space only, and will be more capable of hosting a complex commercial site.

Also, generally people will need a bit more then 1 or 2 MB of space for graphic intensive websites.

1-2 MB of web space is way too low lately. It's more like 100-200MB for a small/medium size website. If you host multimedia content even 1GB might not be enough to accommodate you.

I might not recommend 1-2MB space but 100MB space goes a long way.
Heck when we first started our CaterMe50MB WAS 5mb plan for 95 yearly!
Its pretty funny. Even though we've expanded some things we still do not offer GIGS of space!! Its simply not needed.
The other day a long term client contacted me for a custom plan. He flat out INSISTED on no more than 10mb space!

Heres a very good article from hostsearch:
