Google algorithm is a set of instructions that is used at the backend by Google to decide crawling, indexing and ranking of websites. You can get the major algorithmic updates on google webmasters.

Google's keyword search function is similar to other search engines. Automated programs called spiders or crawlers travel the Web, moving from link to link and building up an index page that includes certain keywords. Google references this index when a user enters a search query.

Each year, Google changes its search algorithm up to 500-600 times. While most of these changes are minor, every few months Google rolls out a “major” algorithmic update that affect search results in significant ways.
For search marketers, knowing the dates of these Google updates can help explain changes in rankings and organic website traffic.

Search Engine Optimizers (SEOs) try to guess this carefully guarded secret so they can manipulate the system in order to make sites come out at the top of search results. There are said to be some 200 factors used to rank a web site, some information about Google's techniques has been gleaned from their algorithm algorithm patents which are public records.
