Network Management Protocol, such as the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), is a standard protocol defined by the Internet Engineering Task force for managing devices connected to networks. Network Management Protocol applies to operation of devices such as routers and switches as well as PCs and servers. The Network Management Protocol describes an application layer protocol and a set of data objects.

A type of network where all users connect to a central server, which is the acting agent for all communications. This server would store both the communications and the user account information. Most public instant messaging platforms use a centralized network.

Network management is the top-level administration and maintenance of large networks, often in areas such as computers or telecommunications, but not including user terminal equipment.

Distributed Architecture Network helps to communicate different type computer networks.

When the Internet was first conceived, there were many different types of computer networks that needed to be able to communicate, and forcing each network to conform to a single type of architecture was unfeasible. To solve this problem, the Internet uses open network architecture; it does not make any assumptions or requirements about the networks connecting to it. This openness has allowed the creation of distributed architecture networks that exist seamlessly on the Internet

Hierarchical Network

Hierarchical systems are as popular in computer systems. Refers to systems that are organized in the shape of a pyramid, with each row of objects linked to objects directly

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely used protocol designed to facilitate the management of networked devices from a central location. Designed originally for the management of devices such as routers and switches, its usage has grown rapidly to encompass the monitoring of nearly any electronic device one can think of. SNMP is now used to monitor and manage television broadcast studios, automated fare collection systems, airborne military platforms, energy distribution systems, emergency radio networks, and much more.

Once the scope of a computing environment extends beyond a single LAN and a few PCs, effective network management is possible only with a set of automated network-management tools. To deal with the multi-vendor environment of the typical installation, a network-management system is needed that is based on standardized network-management protocols and applications

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an "Internet-standard protocol for managing devices on IP networks." Devices that typically support SNMP include routers, switches, servers, workstations, printers, modem racks, and more." It is used mostly in network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. SNMP is a component of the Internet Protocol Suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It consists of a set of standards for network management, including an application layer protocol, a database schema, and a set of data objects.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a popular protocol for network management. It is used for collecting information from, and configuring, network devices, such as servers, printers, hubs, switches, and routers on an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is widely used in network management for network monitoring. SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables on the managed systems organized in a management information base which describe the system status and configuration. SNMP is a component of the Internet Protocol Suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

Network Management Protocol (NMP) is a suite of network protocols that define the processes, procedures and policies for managing, monitoring and maintaining a computer network. NMP conveys and manages the operations and communications performed on a computer network.

The simplicity of SNMP makes it easy for vendors to develop SNMP agents for application in various network-based products/applications. SNMP is most suitable for facilitating the exchange of management information within a network management system (NMS), between the management applications and agents within a network.

A key component in the functionality of SNMP is the Management Information Base (MIB), which is a catalog of objects, which SNMP queries to determine the status of a device. MIB maintains and stores each object with a unique identifier, which IT managers can use to locate the objects that need to be monitored or to extract information provided by the object in the future. The data stored in the MIB is supplied by management agents incorporated in a managed device to collect and store information which gives an insight into the device’s operations and status.

SNMP components

There are 3 components of SNMP:

SNMP Manager –It is a centralised system used to monitor network. It is also known as Network Management Station (NMS)

SNMP agent –It is a software management software module installed on a managed device. Managed devices can be network devices like PC, router, switches, servers etc.

Management Information Base –MIB consists of information of resources that are to be managed. These information is organised hierarchically. It consists of objects instances which are essentially variables.
