Mobile carrier LG Uplus unveiled its cloud computing based game platform called C-games, Wednesday.

Subscribers of various network services can purchase games from the C-games website that can then be played on any device with Web connectivity.

“We have a top level network with more competitiveness than other mobile carriers or broadcasters,” said Chun Byung-wook, senior vice president of LG Uplus’ service platform division. “Cloud games are a central service to LG Uplus’ LTE (long-term evolution) strategy and will once again revolutionize the market.”

“Through cloud games, we want to create a new value for users and let them enjoy high memory games.”

Cloud computing refers to a storage method for data on the web instead of on hard drives. LG Uplus, as the first telecommunications company here to complete a nationwide LTE network, believes it is in the best position to provide games that can be streamed live.

Company officials believe that just as how music and movies went from analogue to digital, then to streaming, games being streamed live through cloud computing is the next trend.

“We will make every effort to create a developer-orientated ecosystem so our game platform becomes the new paradigm and business model in the market,” said Chung. He said that the latest service will ultimately boost the game market to benefit game development and cloud computing service providers, such as partners Nvidia and Ubitus.

The platform gives opportunities for game makers to develop user interfaces cheaply as they don’t need to create different versions of the same game for different operating systems. Making games for a cloud computing platform is more cost-efficient and as a result more profitable, according to LG Uplus.

On the day of the C-games launch, 14 games were released, available for personal computers and smartphones. They will be available on UPlus TV, the company’s Internet protocol television service, in September.

The company said up to 30 games in various genres such as sports, racing, role-playing and adventure will be available within this month. Working with both domestic and foreign game developers, LG plans to release up to 100 titles by the end of the year.

For smartphones, C-games is currently only available to LG Uplus subscribers using LTE networks and on Google’s Android operating system. Subscribers to other mobile carriers will be able to use the service starting next year.

Using cloud computing for games has the advantage of avoiding downloads and allowing access to large-scale memory games anywhere using gadgets either on wired or wireless connections. The service also solves the problem of hacking or illegal downloads.

The subscriber also needs to buy the game only once instead of purchasing the same game multiple times for different devices. Content providers will set the fee per title, which will range from 5,000 to 40,000 won.
