The biggest advantage of colocation is the cost for bandwidth. For example, a low cost limited bandwidth business grade DSL line generally costs around $150 to $200, but for the same price or less a single server can be placed in a colocation facility that provides higher bandwidth speeds and better redundancy for the network connections. These savings can be even greater if the only dedicated network access is a more expensive full or fractional T1 lines.

6 Advantages of Colocation for Your Business. ... Colocation allows you to store your equipment in a cabinet located in a secure data center with a public IP address, bandwidth, and power supplied by the service provider to your server. Colocation also provides: Better connectivity. The internet is attracting many businesses, big and small into investing into online marketing strategies in order to exploit the immense potential of the internet. It is an undeniable fact that they are money in the internet and we are seeing these businesses starting to tap its resources for the first time.Big corporations can easily make the transition into the internet because they have the funds to seamlessly do the shift,
but most small businesses do not have the money to have their own servers to power their own websites. This seemingly problem faced by small businesses are addressed with collocation.

What is colocation?
Colocation is basically sharing one location with another. Colocation works by placing your server in someone else’s rack and share bandwidths. This is a cost effective way of setting up your own hosting which is perfect for small businesses that are starting on their online marketing strategy.

What are the advantages of colocation?
First, colocated servers normally cost less than paying for your own bandwidth. Colocated servers can share the bandwidth with a colocation provider and share the cost of using bandwidth.

Second, because you own the hardware and you are generally sharing only electric power and bandwidth, you can have a free hand on your server and can upgrade it every time you want.

Third, one can have the assistance of colocation providers to maintain and run your server if you don’t have the time and personnel to do for an extra payment. One can also reply on colocation providers to provide security on your machine every day.

What are the disadvantages of colocation?
First disadvantage is that colocation providers are relatively hard to locate. Colocation providers are normally located in cities and major hub for internet services, Colocation providers that are far from your home would relatively cost more due to the services and maintenance colocation providers will provide to keep your server in top shape.

Second disadvantage is that because you are the one that owns your serve, you have all the responsibility in fixing it and upgrading it, unless you pay extra for maintenance.

Third disadvantage is that colocation providers do not regularly change places or move out of town. This is cumbersome especially for businesses that tend to migrate into other places. One must either bring the machine when they move or hire maintenance crew to keep your server fit for service.

That's a fairly bare explanation. But I guess it fits. I also think you can , for at least the most part, are able to get specs catered to your needs with a monthly that is a flat fee regardless of the specs. OF course for a low end server it's much cheaper to just rent. But a Mid to high end server the ROR is much better on collocating.

Colocation also provides:

Better connectivity. Colocation (https://www.esds.co.in/colocation) data centers have fully redundant network connections ensuring that customers’ business critical applications always run uninterrupted.

Improved network security. Data centers have top-notch network security, including the latest firewalls / IDS systems to detect and prevent unauthorized access to their customers’ systems.

Redundant power supply. Colocation data centers offer power redundancy through a combination of multiple power grids, diesel power generators, double battery backup systems and excellent maintenance practices.

Bursting capability. Colocation centers provide customers with the flexibility to burst to higher bandwidth levels to accommodate their traffic demand without having to make repeat capital investments. Since data spikes are distributed over time across numerous users, bandwidth costs are significantly reduced.

Room for growth. Colocation allows you to expand your infrastructure to fit the needs of your company’s growth without having to take on capital expenditures. If you’re company grows, your IT infrastructure can expand to support it quickly and with less investment.

A step toward cloud migration. If your company is looking at cloud computing in the near future, colocation provides a smooth transition by allowing you to move your equipment to an offsite facility with increased capacity and performance to support business needs while ensuring a smooth cloud transition.
