Ok, pretty broad, but let's go for general layman's terms:

Everything you do on the Internet/devices/smartphones/anything connected to an Internet network is run through a data center. It's a giant server farm that houses the servers that power pretty much everything that's online.

A data centre is a dedicated space where companies can keep and operate most of the ICT infrastructure that supports their business. Go4Hosting provides highly resilient, secured and performance-driven data center solutions (http://www.go4hosting.in/services/data-center-india).

A data center is a facility that centralizes an organization’s IT operations and equipment, and where it stores, manages, and disseminates its data. Data centers house a network’s most critical systems and are vital to the continuity of daily operations. Consequentially, the security and reliability of data centers and their information is a top priority for organizations.

Although data center designs are unique, they can generally be classified as Internet or enterprise (or “internal”) data centers. Internet-facing data centers usually support relatively few applications, are typically browser-based, and have many users, typically unknown. In contrast, enterprise data centers service fewer users, but host more applications that vary from off-the-shelf to custom applications.

Data center architectures and requirements can differ significantly. For example, a data center built for a cloud service provider like Amazon EC2 satisfies significantly different facility, infrastructural, and security requirements than a completely private data center, such as one built for the Pentagon that is dedicated to securely maintaining classified data.

A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression) and various security devices. Large data centers are industrial scale operations using as much electricity as a small town.

A data center (https://www.esds.co.in/) is a facility that manages the IT operations of an organization. It is a secure and state-of-the-art system where all your data gets stored securely. It is the home to your most critical systems that can be vital for the smooth running of several key day to day functions. Many companies are waking up to the importance of a data center as it helps them manage their business-critical data securely and with a high degree of reliability.

Data center architectures and necessities can differ in a major way. To give an example, a data center developed for a major cloud service provider must incorporate different facility, security features and infrastructural requirements than say a data center catering to a private entity.

Data centers are going through a steady and continuous process of evolvement as the IT industry continues to make rapid strides in terms of technology and its applications. Data centers too have adopted newer technologies such as virtualization to enhance the use of resources and improve flexibility.

Many IT-based organizations are moving towards cloud-based services and infrastructure which necessities use of data center. Today, data centers are build using the latest technologies and designed to serve a suite of needs of companies. However, the basic characteristics are the same regardless of the size of the data that the data center handles. Smooth software operations are at the core of every data center functionality because the success of all companies depend on the efficient running of its software systems.

Data centers are simply centralized locations where computing and networking equipment is concentrated for the purpose of collecting, storing, processing, distributing or allowing access to large amounts of data. They have existed in one form or another since the advent of computers.
