What is FTP?

It's a File Transfer Protocol invented when you probably didn't born yet :)
It was used to transfer files between the server for the decades already, and have been improved few times already: added SSL support and such things, because basically it didn't support any data safety and even require name and password to be sent cleartext :)

You can still use FTP with modern applications because it's common, supported and light-weight
Most modern OS also supports it natively too.

If you think about installing your own FTP server at the VPS you can take a look at this article (https://serversuit.com/community/technical-tips/view/setup-proftp-on-your-linux-server-in-5-easy-steps.html).

Method of transferring data files from one computer to another over a network. The most basic way of sending and receiving files over internet, FTP divides files into several segments and assigns a reference number to each one. These segments are transmitted in a sequence which the receiving computer reassembles as an exact copy of the original. FTP also performs automatic error detection and correction in file transfers

FTP works in the same way as HTTP for transferring Web pages from a server to a user's browser and SMTP for transferring electronic mail across the Internet in that, like these technologies.

FTP uses a client-server architecture. Users provide authentication using a sign-in protocol, usually a username and password, however some FTP servers may be configured to accept anonymous FTP logins where you don't need to identify yourself before accessing files. Most often, FTP is secured with SSL/TLS.

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer computer files between a client and server on a computer network.
FTP is built on a client-server model architecture and uses separate control and data connections between the client and the server. FTP users may authenticate themselves with a clear-text sign-in protocol, normally in the form of a username and password, but can connect anonymously if the server is configured to allow it. For secure transmission that protects the username and password, and encrypts the content, FTP is often secured with SSL/TLS (FTPS). SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is sometimes also used instead, but is technologically different.
The first FTP client applications were command-line programs developed before operating systems had graphical user interfaces, and are still shipped with most Windows, Unix, and Linux operating systems. Many FTP clients and automation utilities have since been developed for desktops, servers, mobile devices, and hardware, and FTP has been incorporated into productivity applications, such as web page editors.

There are many good free FTP clients available out there. In my opinion, FileZilla and WinSCP are best FTP clients. Personally, I prefer to use WinSCP than Filezilla. It is really easy to use although it feels like there are too many things on the user interface. Except the both, I offen use VPSrobots which is designed with sftp functionality for uploading.
