pache is generally recognized as the world's most popular Web server (HTTP server). Originally designed for Unix servers, the Apache Web server has been ported to Windows and other network operating systems (NOS). The name "Apache" derives from the word "patchy" that the Apache developers used to describe early versions of their software.

The Apache Web server provides a full range of Web server features, including CGI, SSL, and virtual domains. Apache also supports plug-in modules for extensibility. Apache is reliable, free, and relatively easy to configure.

Apache is developed and maintained by an open community of developers under the auspices of the Apache Software Foundation. The application is available for a wide variety of operating systems, including Unix, FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris, Novell NetWare, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, TPF, and eComStation. Released under the Apache License, Apache is characterized as free software and open source software.
Apache is free software distributed by the Apache Software Foundation. The Apache Software Foundation promotes various free and open source advanced Web technologies.

One of the world's most popular Web server programs, Apache was built by a group of open-source programmers and is often used because of its outstanding performance, strong security features and the fact that it is free.Since April 1996 Apache has been the most popular HTTP server on the World Wide Web. As of December 2008[update] Apache served over 51% of all websites. The majority of all web servers using Apache are Linux web servers.

Apache is the name of the software that allows you to run a web service on a UNIX server. Apache is very popular and provides access to most web sites on the internet. A recent Netcraft survey of Web Servers around the world placed Apache Powered sites at over 50 percent of the total. Part of the reason for this maybe that it is freely available, reliable and simple to set up and configure, and it can provide most of the requirements for a web site.

According to the Apache Software Foundation:

The name 'Apache' was chosen from respect for the Native American Indian tribe of Apache, well-known for their superior skills in warfare strategy and their inexhaustible endurance. It also makes a cute pun on "a patchy web server" -- a server made from a series of patches -- but this was not its origin. The group of developers who released this new software soon started to call themselves the "Apache Group".

Apache Tomcat (or Java Tomcat) is a free software provided in open source code format. It is a container of Servlets and JSP (Java Server Pages) developed by ApacheSoftware Foundation. It is written with a Java programing language and can be deployed in any Windows or Linux operating system. The most used integration of Apache Tomcat are Tomcat CentOS and Tomcat Ubuntu.

Java Tomcat runs generally with HTTP server like Apache and it is used to host your Servlets and JSP based applications. That is why Apache Tomcat is called Application Server.
Tomcat is perfect for Java beginners. In some cases, it would be useful to use JDK (Java Development kit) to optimize Apache Tomcat configuration, so that they can get the maximum of their hosted applications and get an optimal tuned application server.

AXELARIS Hosting (http://www.axelaris-hosting.com)offers Virtual Private Server (http://www.axelaris-hosting.com/vps-hosting) (VPS) plans with Apache Tomcat pre-installed and ready to be used, to enable the developers to take immediate advantage of their hosted java server without any pain or effort. AXELARIS Hosting provides hosted Apache Tomcat Server with two of the best Linux server distributions as Java Tomcat CentOS and Java Tomcat Ubuntu. Both of these VPS plans contain Java Development Kit to optimize your Apache Tomcat web server for all kind of applications.
You can find Tomcat at the OS choice step.

often referred to as simply Apache, a public-domain open source Web server developed by a loosely-knit group of programmers. The first version of Apache, based on the NCSA httpd Web server, was developed in 1995.

Core development of the Apache Web server is performed by a group of about 20 volunteer programmers, called the Apache Group. However, because the source code is freely available, anyone can adapt the server for specific needs, and there is a large public library of Apache add-ons. In many respects, development of Apache is similar to development of the Linux operating system.

The original version of Apache was written for UNIX, but there are now versions that run under OS/2, Windows and other platforms.

The name is a tribute to the Native American Apache Indian tribe, a tribe well known for its endurance and skill in warfare. A common misunderstanding is that it was called Apache because it was developed from existing NCSA code plus various patches, hence the name a patchy server, or Apache server.

pache is generally recognized as the world's most popular Web server (HTTP server).

The Apache HTTP Server, colloquially called Apache , is the world's most used web server software. Originally based on the NCSA HTTPd server, development of Apache began in early 1995 after work on the NCSA code stalled. Apache played a key role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web, quickly overtaking NCSA HTTPd as the dominant HTTP server, and has remained most popular since April 1996. In 2009, it became the first web server software to serve more than 100 million websites.

Apache Web Server is an open-source web server creation, deployment, and management software. Initially developed by a group of software programmers, it is now maintained by the Apache Software Foundation.

Apache Web Server is designed to create web servers that have the ability to host one or more HTTP-based websites. Notable features include the ability to support multiple programming languages, server-side scripting, an authentication mechanism and database support. Apache Web Server can be enhanced by manipulating the code base or adding multiple extensions/add-ons.

It is also widely used by web hosting companies for the purpose of providing shared/virtual hosting, as by default, Apache Web Server supports and distinguishes between different hosts that reside on the same machine.

Apache is an open-source and free web server software that powers around 40% of websites around the world. The official name is Apache HTTP Server, and it’s maintained and developed by the Apache Software Foundation.

It allows website owners to serve content on the web — hence the name “web server.” It’s one of the oldest and most reliable web servers, with the first version released more than 20 years ago, in 1995.

When someone wants to visit a website, they enter a domain name into the address bar of their browser. Then, the web server delivers the requested files by acting as a virtual delivery man.
