The Apache HTTP Server Project is a collaborative software development effort aimed at creating a robust, commercial-grade, featureful, and freely-available source code implementation of an HTTP (Web) server. The project is jointly managed by a group of volunteers located around the world, using the Internet and the Web to communicate, plan, and develop the server and its related documentation. This project is part of the Apache Software Foundation. In addition, hundreds of users have contributed ideas, code, and documentation to the project. This file is intended to briefly describe the history of the Apache HTTP Server and recognize the many contributors.

The Apache HTTP Server, colloquially called Apache, is the world's most used web server software. Originally based on the NCSA HTTPd server, development of Apache began in early 1995 after work on the NCSA code stalled. Apache played a key role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web, quickly overtaking NCSA HTTPd as the dominant HTTP server, and has remained most popular since April 1996. In 2009, it became the first web server software to serve more than 100 million websites.

Apache is a freely available Web server that is distributed under an "open source" license. Version 2.0 runs on most UNIX-based operating systems (such as Linux, Solaris, Digital UNIX, and AIX), on other UNIX/POSIX-derived systems (such as Rhapsody, BeOS, and BS2000/OSD), on AmigaOS, and on Windows 2000.

One of the reasons for the popularity of the Apache was the support of the php and CGI-scripts. For a long time Apache prevailed on the web as the main web server, until the nginx appeared. One of the drawbacks in Apache's work is that for each connection a process is created, unlike nginx, where each worker processes a large number of connections.
Often these two servers use together, using nginx as a frontend to distribute static files, and apache on the backend to handle dynamic queries.

Apache Web Server is an open-source web server creation, deployment, and management software. Initially developed by a group of software programmers, it is now maintained by the Apache Software Foundation.
It is designed to create web servers that have the ability to host one or more HTTP-based websites. Notable features include the ability to support multiple programming languages, server-side scripting, an authentication mechanism and database support. It can be enhanced by manipulating the code base or adding multiple extensions/add-ons.
