Since search engines keep different metrics for domains than they do subdomains, it is recommended that webmasters place link-worthy content like blogs in subfolders rather than subdomains. (i.e. www.example.com/blog/ rather than blog.example.com) The notable exceptions to this are language-specific websites. (i.e., en.example.com for the English version of the website).

A sub-domain is a seperate site and should have its own pagerank.
Exact duplicate content and you're starting to look for trouble.

Intelinking between domain/subdomains seems to be regarded as interlinking within one domain.

    Hi

Since Google released Panda and Penguin there seems to be a confirmed benefit to using a subdomain as it allows you to get a primary keyword at the beginning of your URL. The downside is that it requires more effort to link to and promote a sub domain which is akin to a separate site in Googles eyes. A case of horses for courses, thats very dependent on the time and resources you are prepared to throw at your project.

Sub-domain is consider as the separate domain. If you would like to use it for the separate site then go for it. If you are just testing something then directory will work that us domain_name.com/directory will work.

Hosting provider has some charge for the sub-domain. SEO ranking will be different for the subdomain so if it's separate site then go for sub-domain instead of domain_name.com/directory.
