A canonical tag is used to avoid the duplicate web content issue. It will improve the site SEO. Those are used to describe the home page. Visitors used to see the canonical URL.

If you've already added canonical tags then no need to add 301 redirect. Canonical tags are more appropriate than 301 redirect. This is the best practice so you can keep them, no need to add 301 redirect.

A canonical tag (aka "rel canonical") is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs. Practically speaking, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in search results.

    HI

Canonical tags can also be useful to solve www and non-www duplicate content—where two URLs, identical except that one begins with "www" and the other does not point to the same page. This particular problem can be solved by proper use of the canonical tag.

    Techniques for canonical URLs:
For example, if you've chosen to use non-www URLs as the canonical type, you should redirect all www URLs to their equivalent URL without the www. When adding such a tag, you serve the same content for both domains, telling search engines which URL is canonical.
