The rel=canonical element, often called the “canonical link”, is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues. It does this by specifying the “canonical URL”, the “preferred” version of a web page – the original source, even. Using it well improves a site’s SEO.

The idea is simple: if you have several similar versions of the same content, you pick one “canonical” version and point the search engines at it. This solves the duplicate content problem where search engines don’t know which version of the content to show in their results. This article takes you through how and when to use them, and how to avoid common mistakes.

Canonical is a preferred url for most search engines as they lift up your links & ranking signals for the content available through multiple URL’s. Rel canonical url’s also resolve duplicate content issues. Rel=canonical usually used to sum up it within the top portion of your HTML.

A canonical tag is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the unique copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or duplicate content appearing on multiple URL s. Basically, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in Google search results.

A canonical tag specifies the source URL (or original content page) of a given page to a search engine such as Google. Canonical tags are used to declare a single page as its own source or for duplicate pages to reference their source / originating page. Search Engines use the canonical tag to combat duplicate content issues and assign search engine ranking value for that content to the page designated as the “source” URL.
