As Rockoids says, the biggest difference is you can use all of the dedicated resources as you are the only account on the server. You also have control over the server and can make modifications to the software as you wish since no other accounts are affected.

Even the fairly low powered unmanaged dedicated server I have runs my sites much more reliably than they ran on a shared account on an HG or other hosting server.

The server resources are shared and you only get a small place on it.

Would recommend getting servers from such a greta providers as exmasters.com and utropicmedia.net knowing they are offering reasonable costs for the stable servers you may use for almost any purpose.

A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of Internet hosting in which the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service.

Dedicated server hosting offers you the permission to rent an entire server with on-location technical support. If you have a high request for sever resources, dedicated server is the best choice for you. You can custommize the server as you want. You should select a dedicated server hosting if your web site requires customized options or your web site need dedicated rerource due to the high amount of traffic.
While shared hosting provides a shared space for you to build your web site. You should share all the server resource with everyone on the same server. I think it is very cheap and economic plan if you run a small or medium sized site. That will save you lots of money for other use.

You don't need a dedicated server unless the site gets very popular, however if you are planning to reencode videos so they integrate with flash player,

Dedicated Servers are always better than shared hosting. In terms of pricing it is slightly higher but you get to use full resources. It depends on for what purpose you are going to use the servers.
