There is a great difference between colocation and dedcated server hosting.

Colocation: You get rack space, power, bandwidth and other data centre facilities. Ship you server to the DC and they rack it for you. Here the server hardware belongs to the client. In most cases this service is unmanaged. You get support only for the facilities provided by the provider. Other services would be considered as Advanced Remote Hands.

Dedicated Server: You can choose between managed and unmanaged services here. You get all the facilities like colocation and additional the server hardware is provided by the service provider. So if you face any hardware issues the provider will replace it for you. Mostly the software and applications are managed by the end customer, if they have not opted for fully managed services.

It is a department which aids with colocation. Below should explain what they do: Colocation (or co-location) is the act of placing multiple (sometimes related) entities within a single location. Colocation is often used in the data sourcing industry to mean off-site data storage, usually in a data center. This is very important for businesses since the loss of data can be crucial.

A colocation (colo) is a data center facility in which a business can rent space for servers and other computing hardware.

Typically, a colo provides the building, cooling, power, bandwidth and physical security while the customer provides servers and storage. Space in the facility is often leased by the rack, cabinet, cage or room. Many colos have extended their offerings to include managed services that support their customers' business initiatives.

In colocation the datacenters provide you secure and reliable location for your IT equipment. All services are provided within the datacenter like cooling infrastructure, power supply backup, network connectivity, remote hands on service, etc.

Physical benefits: Usually the datacenter building has high security and all provide lockable cabinets or cages surrounding server rack.

Cooling systems: colocation facilities provide powerful air conditioning systems to keep the air appropriately cool and moisture-free.

Power back-ups: All colocation facilities have a power backup arrangement leading to no power failures. They also provide 99.99% uptime.

Economic advantages: Colocation is the biggest advantage for small scale business as it saves a lot of infrastructure cost
