What is SSL Certificate and how it works ?

The Secure Socket Layer protocol was created by Netscape to ensure secure transactions between web servers and browsers. The protocol uses a third party, a Certificate Authority (CA), to identify one end or both end of the transactions. This is in short how it works.

A browser requests a secure page (usually https://).

The web server sends its public key with its certificate.

The browser checks that the certificate was issued by a trusted party (usually a trusted root CA), that the certificate is still valid and that the certificate is related to the site contacted.

The browser then uses the public key, to encrypt a random symmetric encryption key and sends it to the server with the encrypted URL required as well as other encrypted http data.

The web server decrypts the symmetric encryption key using its private key and uses the symmetric key to decrypt the URL and http data.

The web server sends back the requested html document and http data encrypted with the symmetric key.

The browser decrypts the http data and html document using the symmetric key and displays the information.

SSL certificate is very important for online transaction.Processing transactions securely on the web means that we need to be able to transmit information between the web site and the customer in a manner that makes it difficult for other people to intercept and read. SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, takes care of this for us and it works through a combination of programs and encryption/decryption routines that exist on the web hosting computer and in browser programs (like Netscape and Internet Explorer) used by the internet public.

Now looking at the applications, you need SSL if...you provide online transactions such as online orders and credit cards processing system in your online store, or if you have a sign in facility or if you store private and sensitive data of each user, or if you have a bunch of rules and regulations to be followed regarding privacy and security requirements, or if you want to get confidence of your customer and expect them to trust you.

Moreover, SSL certificates feature a range of encryption levels to be considered to select the strength of trust you want to develop in end user. Certificate Authorities use a wide variety of authentication methods to verify the credentials or information provided by organizations.

Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. Another protocol for transmitting data securely over the World Wide Web is Secure HTTP (S-HTTP). Whereas SSL creates a secure connection between a client and a server, over which any amount of data can be sent securely, S-HTTP is designed to transmit individual messages securely.
