A back link is an inward link to your site that may or may not be reciprocated with an outward link back.

Backlinks are loosely defined as hyperlinks pointing to a particular domain name. According Björneborn and Ingwersen, backlinks can also be described (in terms addition geek) as a link that is received from one node to another node of web content. An Internet node name can be a high-level domain, web site, directory or page content.

The quality of each backlink can be partly judged by the popularity of the page from which it originates. Other search engines may not find the backlinks as important but they are still used to rate the importance of your website.Your site will need high quality content as well as good incoming links in order to rank well.

If page X links to page Y, then a 'back link' would be a link which goes from page Y back to page X.

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. Inbound links were originally important (prior to the emergence of search engines) as a primary means of web navigation; today their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (for example, this is used by Google to determine the PageRank of a webpage). Outside of SEO, the backlinks of a webpage may be of significant personal, cultural or semantic interest: they indicate who is paying attention to that page.
