DNS is the Domain Name System. It is a distributed database of human-meaningful domain names mapped to network-meaningful IP addresses. Web browsers and other internet clients access DNS information through a series of recursive calls to various nodes in the DNS database.

The domain name system (DNS) connects URLs with their IP address. With DNS, it’s possible to type words instead of a string of numbers into a browser, allowing people to search for websites and send emails using familiar names.

Domain Name Servers (DNS) are the Internet's equivalent of a phone book. They maintain a directory of domain names and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. This is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers or machines, access websites based on IP addresses.

DNS stands for Domain Name System. It's kind of like having a phone directory that lists names next to numbers.

Computers identify themselves by IP addresses. Which is a problem if humans want to tell each other what computer to look for online (a URL). A DNS server acts as the intermediary. You tell your ISP the URL you want to find. The ISP asks a DNS server which IP address matchs that URL, and returns the correct result to you.

There are many DNS servers in the world – in order to speed up access. This is why it can take a day or two for your URL to propagate across the internet.

The Domain Name System (DNS) converts Internet domain and host names to IP addresses and vice versa. DNS automatically simplifies between the names we type in our Web browser address bar to the IP addresses of Web servers hosting those sites.

DNS stands for Domain Name System. The DNS is a service that converts user-friendly domain names like google.com into a computer-friendly IP address such as 64.233.160.0. The IP address enables the browser to locate the server with the requested content.

The Domain Name Systems (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. Humans access information online through domain names, like nytimes.com or espn.com. Web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load Internet resources.

With DNS, it’s possible to type words instead of a string of numbers into a browser, allowing people to search for websites and send emails using familiar names. When you search for a domain name in a browser, it sends a query over the internet to match the domain with its corresponding IP. Once located, it uses the IP to retrieve the website’s content. Most impressively, this whole process takes just milliseconds.

The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name.
