Reverse DNS is a method of resolving an IP address into a domain name, just as the domain name system (DNS) resolves domain names into associated IP addresses.

In computer networks, a reverse DNS lookup or reverse DNS resolution (rDNS) is the querying of the Domain Name System (DNS) to determine the domain name associated with an IP address – the reverse of the usual "forward" DNS lookup of an IP address from a domain name. The process of reverse resolving an IP address uses PTR records. The reverse DNS database of the Internet is rooted in the arpa top-level domain.

A reverse DNS lookup takes an IP address and returns the domain name associated with that IP. A forward DNS lookup does just the opposite.

The Reverse Lookup tool will do a reverse IP lookup. If you type in an IP address, we will attempt to locate a dns PTR record for that IP address.
