Most search engines will respect the robots.txt file. But some will just crawl those directories anyways. To prvent them the only way is to block them.

A robots.txt file restricts access to your site by search engine robots that crawl the web.

You might be surprised to hear that one small text file, known as robots.txt, could be the downfall of your website. If you get the file wrong you could end up telling search engine robots not to crawl your site, meaning your web pages won’t appear in the search results. Therefore, it’s important that you understand the purpose of a robots.txt file and learn how to check you’re using it correctly.

Robot.txt is a text file, it can edit and put in your website while nofollow is a meta tag. With Robots.txt, the search engine cannot crawl the page but with Nofollow meta tag, the page is still crawlable, but in search engine’s index, this page is not shown, and there will be no outgoing links from that page.

The robots exclusion standard, also known as the robots exclusion protocol or simply robots.txt, is a standard used by websites to communicate with web crawlers and other web robots. The standard specifies how to inform the web robot about which areas of the website should not be processed or scanned.

Robots.txt is a file on a website that instructs search engine crawlers which parts of the site should not be accessed by search engine bot programs. Robots.txt is a plaintext file but uses special commands and syntax for webcrawlers. Though not officially standardized, robots.txt is generally followed by all search engines.
