Most people use Apache for a web server. Some use Litespeed, but I get better results from Apache though.
The usual FTP is proftp. As for email most people are using Exim for SMTP.
You can get the whole setup ready for hosting using cPanel.

If you are looking for a good web hosting provider then some things are keep in mind, one thing is hosting prices because it vary according to the kind of hosting so you should have deep knowledge about your hosting package like number of domains you get, which tools the web hosting company provides, about space and bandwidth and any other extra feature or bonus if offered. In terms of web hosting, UNIX supporters will tell you that UNIX offers a lower cost of development than Windows because most UNIX hosting plans are cheaper than Windows hosting plans. Why? Because most web hosts use a free version of UNIX (like Linux or FreeBSD) so they don't have to pay thousands of dollars to buy the operating system and associated tools to run the server or pay to upgrade their licenses every few years. Microsoft will tell you that the reverse is true however with the time and energy you spend supporting yourself offsetting any cost gains in the free OS.

Unix hosting is hosting provided by the robust Unix operating system. Linux servers are known for their value, stability and wide feature set. You do not have to be running Linux to use a hosting provider with Linux Servers. It is simply the software used by the server to share out a website.

Unix hosting is the most commonly used operating system among Web servers. Unix is a text-based, multitasking operating system that is designed to be used by many people at the same time.UNIX hosting is the most common web hosting platform today. The term UNIX refers to a computer operating system which provides the base operating system architecture for many open source companies including Solaris (Sun), Linux (GNU) and others. UNIX has been around for years and is the choice language for mid-frame computer users. UNIX hosting solutions is considered more available due to open source distribution of its operating system. LINUX hosting is a version of UNIX that has gained popularity because of its stability as an operating system. You will find these two terms being used interchangeably, which effectively refers to the same type of hosting solution.

    Unix hosting

Unix hosting is the predominant form of cheap hosting based on servers running a Unix like operating system. Unix (or its free cousin Linux) is an alternative to Microsoft's Windows operating systems and has become very popular because of the availability of a many free or low cost tools and applications such as the Apache web server software.

    Unix hosting ?
what are the application of Unix hosting ?
According to Ehow, the main advantages of Unix OS are:

    Stability

Large servers that power e-mail and web services often use Unix operating systems because of the design, which is focused on stability and flexibility. Companies that run servers require them to stay up and running for long periods of time, maintaining all the files on the server so they can always be accessed reliably. Often, the measured up-time (or the time a computer has been running without a shutdown or reboot) of a Unix system can be months or even years. Unix systems also allow users to choose from several different methods of file storage, so servers can be tailored to store certain data in the most stable and efficient way possible.

    Efficiency

Unix systems can be a cost-effective alternative to other operating systems because they require less resources, and they run well on hardware without causing slowdowns in computing or graphical functionality. Other operating systems may only work on advanced hardware, or require large amounts of memory or disk space. Unix systems have made significant advances in processor and memory usage techniques, and tend to handle the resources more efficiently. Because of this, Unix systems can be installed on older hardware with little or no performance loss. This results in smaller hardware costs and a wider range of hardware options.

    Cost

Most Unix systems (such as Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD) are absolutely free, released under open-source licensing. This spares users from costly upgrade cycles once a particular system is out of date. Most applications for Unix systems also cost nothing; they come bundled with the system and are ready "out of the box." Software for tasks such as word processing (OpenOffice.org) and image manipulation similar to Photoshop (Gimp) are available at no cost to the user. Unlike other systems, most of these programs come already installed, configured and ready for use.

    Security

Unix systems were originally conceived and built as multi-user, networked systems, which contributes to their overall security. Employing a multi-user setup requires that each user have his or her own credentials to access system resources, and administrator privileges are required to install software or run any program that accesses sensitive information. Also, Unix desktops and workstations comprise only a relatively small part of the overall desktop market. Therefore, hackers rarely write trojans and worms to attack them, focusing instead on Windows systems.
