Linux is an open source system that supports a wide range of software, applications, languages, and databases such as PHP, Perl, MySQL and many others making it very scalable. On the downside, Linux is not fully compatible with most of the Microsoft technologies so if you are using Access, ASP, MS SQL, or VB development tools then Windows is better.
The main "advantage" or distinction of Windows servers is that they can run Microsoft software such as Access and MS SQL databases. Windows servers also offer web developers the use of Microsoft's programming environments such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Basic Scripts, MS Index Server.

Users can develop web site using the familiar interface of Microsoft tools such as, Visual Interdev, and Microsoft Access. With ASP users can develop a database-driven web site using Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL as the database.

The choice of OS mainly depends on the apps you are planning to host.
For reliable Linux hosting services, can recommend hostforweb.com web host.
They have amazing support, either by phone (very fast,--no more than 3 minutes wait time). Their support personnel are knowledgeable and very quick to resolve any issues.

Linux is an open source and free OS whereas Windows is paid OS and beside this the selection of OS rely on the applications used in website development.

As Heshan already pointed out -- what counts for you as a user is if you need to use Access, ASP, MS SQL, or if e.g. MySQL will work instead of MS SQL. In general, only Microsoft applications, here not all either, need those mentioned data bases, while the very large majority of scripts on the market will use MySQL, for example.

Linux web hosting is very economical as Linux is a free operating system. Only the cost of distribution is borne by the host or owner. A Linux website can easily be converted to a Windows website without much hassle. Linux is an open source software product and thus it does not need the high licensing fees that other operating systems, you can freely download and use it at no cost.

    Linux Hosting:
Linux is an open source system and is therefore more cost-effective to operate and maintain than Windows, meaning that Linux hosting will cost you less than Windows hosting. Linux also has a reputation for stability and speed which means that Linux web servers will crash less often than Windows web servers and Linux runs most processes faster than Windows.

On the downside, Linux is not fully compatible with some Microsoft technologies so if you are using Access, ASP, MS SQL, or VB development tools then Windows would be a better bet.

    Good explanation.
The main reason for our customers to choose or not to choose Windows (but by now we stopped Windows plans all together) is the use of Access and MS SQL databases. If a customers does not need to use either one, but can go with MySQL, then there is no need for the expensive and more easy to hack Windows server, then Linux is what works best.

The main disadvantages of Linux based hosting is that they are unable to accommodate some windows applications and the coding conversions. This is considered to be the major disadvantage of linux web hosting.

That's why i always recommend to people to choose windows vps hosting
