I think that each has it advantages. There are no best or worst solutions to all scenarios, it depends on what do you actually need. I believe there is no need to pay for something you will not use.
I feel VMWare is the industry leader but MS is closing the gap fast. Hyper-V is a very stable hypervisor and is much more affordable.

Hyper-V is free (if you'd manage to find a way to manage it for free), gives away more features free of charge VMware is expecting you to pay (Live Migration, HA, VM replica etc), and has less flexed hardware requirements (compatibility list).

Hyper-V is that it will be included in Windows Server 2008, meaning it is possible to conserve on licensing costs despite VMware's or Citrix XenServer's virtualization programs. Microsoft offer better support for your server applications should they run on Hyper-V contrary to third-party virtualization programs.

Hyper-V, codenamed Viridian[5] and formerly known as Windows Server Virtualization, is a native hypervisor that enables platform virtualization on x86-64 systems.[6] A beta version of Hyper-V was shipped with certain x86-64 editions of Windows Server 2008, and a finalized version (automatically updated through Windows Update) was released on June 26, 2008.[7] Hyper-V has since been released in a free stand-alone version, and has been upgraded to Release 2 (R2) status.[8][9] It was updated in Windows Server 2012.[10]
