Choosing a type of web host totally depends up on the type of website you are hosting. The basic difference between Linux hosting and windows hosting are given below

    Linux hosting:

    Applications Requiring Linux Server:

    SSH
Apache modules requiring applications or scripts.
    Php/perl
    CGI

    Security :

Linux servers is secure. But in reality, it depends more on the setup and hosting system administration rather than OS.

Control Panel: cPanel or WHM (web Host Manager) is used on Linux shared, reseller, VPS and Dedicated servers.

    Windows hosting:

Windows server is needed by following applications:

    ASP Classic
    MS Access (Microsoft Access)
    MSSQL (Microsoft SQL Server)

    Security:

Generally, Windows servers are considered as more vulnerable than the Linux servers but in reality, it depends more on the setup and hosting system administration rather than OS.

Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is more secure and more efficient than Windows. One other difference is that Linux files are case-sensitive and Windows files are not.

    Example:

On a Linux server, home.html and Home.html are different names.

On a Windows server, home.html, Home.html, and HOME.HTML are the same name.

One of the best difference is that Linux files are case-sensitive and Windows files are not. Linux also has more of the features web designers expect, so unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice.

There are lots of features of Linux web hosting services. Following are the few of them:

    1. They are most up to date with recent technology, supporting the newest programming languages, blogging / e-commerce platforms etc

    2. They manage their email servers properly, so your out going emails will not be marked as spam because they used spamAssassian

    3. More efficient technical support

For that purpose most important thing is Find best traffic handling Hosting company to stable your business site.

    1. Linux mostly provides CLI console which requires lesser memory. Windows provides GUI console and so it requires more memory, otherwise, it hangs.
    2. Linux provides many levels of security like tables, tcp_wrapper and pam. Windows provides security in the form of firewall only.
    3. Linux is open source, it has many open source control panels for managing to host but most commonly used control panels are cPanel/WHM and Plesk which are paid. Windows server, most commonly used control panels are Plesk and WebsitePanel.

Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is the most popular operating system for web servers. Since Linux-based hosting is more popular, it has more of the features web designers expect. So unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice.
    Windows Specific ApplicationsWindows Hosting
Windows applications which require a Windows server:

    ASP Classic
    ASP.NET
    MSSQL (Microsoft SQL Server)
    MS Access (Microsoft Access)
    Visual Basic Development
    C#
    Remote Desktop (dedicated server only)
Windows Dedicated Servers can support additional Windows-specific applications. For some applications, you may need to purchase a license and install the software on your Windows dedicated server.

Microsoft Exchange (requires license & Installation)
Microsoft SharePoint (requires license & Installation)

    Linux Specific ApplicationsLinux Hosting
Applications that require a Linux-based server.

    SSH
Scripts or applications that require specific Apache modules
    Control Panels
Windows servers and Linux servers use different control panels.

cPanel is available on all Linux-based hosting plans, such as Linux Shared, Reseller, VPS and Linux Dedicated Servers.
WHM (Web Host Manager) is available on Linux Reseller, VPS and Dedicated Servers.
Plesk is available on Windows Shared and Dedicated Servers.
    File Names
Another difference between Linux and Windows servers is that Linux files are case sensitive while Windows files are not.

    For example:
On a Linux server, home.html and Home.html are different names.
On a Windows server, home.html, Home.html and HOME.HTML are all the same name.
    Server Security
Although many people consider Linux to be more secure than Windows, both operating systems are equally secure. Security really depends more upon the server setup and the administrators running the server. All of HostGator's managed servers are maintained with the latest security and performance patches and configured for optimal security.
