Well, there is no definite answer t this question because it can differ from site to site. You more than probably have arrived on some web portals and multimedia powered sites which are empowered using Flash intros and so in such cases, the page sizes might go up but this might be necessary sometimes and there is no problem.
It can be a good idea trying to shrink the large and big images and photos because smaller seized web elements would definitely load faster.
