The 404 or Not Found error message is an HTTP status code that means that the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server.

Technically, an Error 404 is a client-side error, implying that the error is your mistake, either because a user attempts to follow a broken or dead link or the page has been moved or removed from the website and you should have known.

Another possibility is if a website has moved a page or resource but did so without redirecting the old URL to the new one. When that happens, you'll receive a 404 error instead of being automatically routed to the new page. Probably you need to reconfiguree .htaccess file.

Also it can happen if you installed a script or template that requires more resources than yours hosting plan provides in this case contact with your hosting provider.

The HTTP 404 Not Found Error means that the webpage you were trying to reach could not be found on the server. It is a Client-side Error which means that either the page has been removed or moved and the URL was not changed accordingly, or that you typed in the URL incorrectly.

Yep, this guy knows his stuff. I recently encountered a range of problems with my computer, every page seemed to have 404ed. I contacted a computer repair company and they got it fixed for me. :

The Error 404 "Page not found" is the error page displayed whenever someone asks for a page that’s simply not available on your site. The reason for this is that there may be a link on your site that was wrong or the page might have been recently removed from the site. As there is no web page to display, the web server sends a page that simply says "404 Page not found".

404 Not Found error messages can appear in any browser and in any operating system. Most 404 Not Found errors display inside the Internet browser window just as webpages do.

when 404 error comes, your audience gets out of your website. by fixing 404 error, actually you create a page that is a part of your website, it has same format as ur site, same logo and as if it is one of the page of your site. It will show the error and will suggest to visit the relevant page.

Usually, when someone requests a page that doesn’t exist, a server will return a 404 (not found) error. This HTTP response code clearly tells both browsers and search engines that the page doesn’t exist. As a result, the content of the page (if any) won’t be crawled or indexed by search engines.

404 Error Means the page you are requesting is not found on your server. It might be because the link must be broken or the path to that page might have changed.

A 404 error just means that the page was unable to be recovered by the server. A lot of websites will give out a 404 error if the site is down for maintenance.
