Technically, an Error 404 is a client-side error, implying that the error is your mistake, either because a user attempts to follow a broken or dead link or the page has been moved or removed from the website and you should have known.

Another possibility is if a website has moved a page or resource but did so without redirecting the old URL to the new one. When that happens, you'll receive a 404 error instead of being automatically routed to the new page. Probably you need to reconfiguree .htaccess file.

Also it can happen if you installed a script or template that requires more resources than yours hosting plan provides in this case contact with your hosting provider.
Yep, this guy knows his stuff. I recently encountered a range of problems with my computer, every page seemed to have 404ed. I contacted a computer repair company and they got it fixed for me. :

The Error 404 "Page not found" is the error page displayed whenever someone asks for a page that’s simply not available on your site. The reason for this is that there may be a link on your site that was wrong or the page might have been recently removed from the site. As there is no web page to display, the web server sends a page that simply says "404 Page not found".

404 errors cause 404 error pages to be displayed when visitors to your website request a page or pages that do not exist or your website has broken links. The standard "Error 404 - File not found" or a similar notice is displayed. This dreaded message does not give your website a good image and does not give any advice to the visitor as to what he did wrong..

404 is the HTTP header response code to clearly indicate that the page you are looking on the site does not exist/permanently gone.
