404 is a frequently-seen status code that tells a Web user that a requested page is "Not found." 404 and other status codes are part of the Web's Hypertext Transfer Protocol ( HTTP ), written in 1992 by the Web's inventor, Tim Berners-Lee. He took many of the status codes from the earlier Internet protocol for transferring files, the File Transfer Protocol ( FTP .)

When server is not able to find the right page which is requested by the client than server gives a 404 (Page not Found) error.
Some times we need to remove some unwanted pages OR updated some older pages with the new one. And by chance if final requested URL is not exist then it throws a 404 error.
It can be solved by adding the appropriate rule in web config or htacess file

A 404 error is the standardized HTTP status code. The message is sent from the webserver of an online presence, to the web browser (usually the client) that sent the HTTP request. The browser then displays this error code.
