Yes, I would also recomend that you learn the tricks of the search engine optimization trade. It will prove to be most valuable for any web site you build.

Another method of course is to purchase targeted traffic by means of pay per click advertising on Google and other PPC sites. Be careful though as it can become very expensive if you don't watch your ROI closely. I would advise that you avoid like the plague any of the services which promise you hundreds of thousands of visits for a cheap price. Trust me, the traffic is NOT targeted as many claim and all you will get is a bill and junk traffic from casino or freebie sites which mean nothing in terms of buying power for your product.

Advertise. If you want to do it for free or low cost then try doing free press releases to let everyone know about the Grand Opening of the site.

Antiques.... find out who your target market is and hit them hard. If little old ladies are who your buyers are going to be then go to church bake sales and bingo parlors or wherever you can think of in your community and hand out coupons. Kind of a silly example but you get the point...

Reading some SEO articles is a good place to start, but be carefull of SEO companies that offer you their services some of them can be scams. A good way to raise ranks on google is to link your website with another one that has a good ranking. And also word of mouth can be surprisingly beneficial at times.

I find that word of mouth is the best form of advertisement. I am a former recruiter and to me trying to get exposure or customers via search engines is like cold calling. While it should not be neglected don't get too wrapped around SE ranking and forget the other areas such as area canvassing, store visits, passing out advertising, and paid advertising. Having a well levelled spread accross those areas should produce promising results.

Yes I very much agree with James-A, forum posting is a great way of getting traffic. Lot of forums allow each user to create his own signature. So each time you post something over certain forum your signature would be automatically attached.Link exchange is another way of getting traffic,the benefit of this way is you get traffic from the site you have linked exchange with, for free,in return that site also receives traffic coming out of your site.
