Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The W3C's XML 1.0 Specification and several other related specifications—all of them free open standards—define XML
The design goals of XML emphasize simplicity, generality, and usability across the Internet. It is a textual data format with strong support via Unicode for different human languages. Although the design of XML focuses on documents, the language is widely used for the representation of arbitrary data structures[6] such as those used in web services.

    Hello Friends,

XML is a file extension for an Extensible Markup Language (XML) file format used to create common information formats and share both the format and the data on the World Wide Web, intranets, and elsewhere using standard ASCII text.

XML is the extensible markup language. It s used to store and transport the data. It is self descriptive language. It just has the information wrapped in the tag. The data is stored in simple text format in the XML. This provides a software- and hardware-independent way of storing, transporting, and sharing data.

The main use of XML is the interchange of data over the Internet.

I agree with pellekarlsson which posted above about XML. XML is short for "Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. XML is much like HTML, but XML was designed to describe data and HTML was designed to display data. Also XML is not a replacement of HTML." In layman's terms this explanation is exactly what XML encompasses.

XML remains for Extensible Markup Language. It is a content based markup dialect got from Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).

XML is a language that's very similar to HTML. ... XML is a meta-language: a language that allows us to create or define other languages. For example, with XML we can create other languages, such as RSS, MathML (a mathematical markup language), and even tools like XSLT.
