File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard Internet protocol for transmitting files between computers on the Internet over TCP/IP connections.
FTP is a client-server protocol that relies on two communications channels between client and server: a command channel for controlling the conversation and a data channel for transmitting file content.

A user typically needs to log on to the FTP server, although some servers make some or all of their content available without login, also known as anonymous FTP.

It's a File Transfer Protocol invented when you probably didn't born yet
It was used to transfer files between the server for the decades already, and have been improved few times already: added SSL support and such things, because basically it didn't support any data safety and even require name and password to be sent cleartext

You can still use FTP with modern applications because it's common, supported and light-weight
Most modern OS also supports it natively too.

If you think about installing your own FTP server at the VPS you can take a look at this article.

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. As the name suggests, FTP is used to transfer files between computers on a network. You can use FTP to exchange files between computer accounts, transfer files between an account and a desktop computer, or access online software archives. Keep in mind, however, that many FTP sites are heavily used and require several attempts before connecting.

Note: You need to use a client that supports secure FTP to transfer files to and from Indiana University's central systems. For more, see At IU, what SSH/SFTP clients are supported and where can I get them?

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer computer files between a client and server on a computer network. FTP is built on a client-server model architecture and uses separate control and data connections between the client and the server.

Method of transferring data files from one computer to another over a network. The most basic way of sending and receiving files over internet, FTP divides files into several segments and assigns a reference number to each one. These segments are transmitted in a sequence which the receiving computer reassembles as an exact copy of the original. FTP also performs automatic error detection and correction in file transfers

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the commonly used protocol for exchanging files over the Internet. FTP uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols to enable data transfer. FTP uses a client-server architecture, often secured with SSL/TLS. FTP promotes sharing of files via remote computers with reliable and efficient data transfer.
