drawbacks of virtual servers is the problems related to maintenance. The virtual servers have their own OS and software. The physical server will have to look after all these operating systems without any fail. The control panel will have to make sure that the servers are delivering high performance with a superior up time. And the host needs to make sure that security and updates are offered without any issues.

I would say that the majority of people looking for Web hosting don't even need the VPS technology even though they say they do. VPS technology is very good and managable - however, it does depend on the host themselves and how well they maintain their servers. A company with Shared hosting that has great server up-time, will seem better than a company with VPS technology and bad server up-time. It can go the other way around as well. So when it comes down to it, if you don't know a lot about Web hosting, you'll be fine choosing a host with shared hosting whose reliable and consistent. But, some people need the VPS technology due to certain applications or programming that they've done for their web site.

VPS is better because you can control almost everything, they offer less space for a VPS because is harder to oversell the resources.

Save hundreds of dollars when compared to dedicated server hosting. Avoid the performance problems of 'regular' virtual hosting and get root level control over your hosting. Keep your Code and Data Safe. Other web hosts may offer shared VMs where your programs run inside the same process as other site's programs. This is very insecure. It potentially exposes your applications, passwords, and your data.

Actually, you will get more disk space and bandwidth with VPS plans rather than shared hosting plan.

    When to choose VPS hosting?

    1. You need a root level access of your server.
    2. To get more disk space, bandwidth limit.
    3. When your application requires some custom component or need some functions enable like curl_exec() which is not advisable to install in shared environment.
    4. VPS comes in cheaper prices than dedicated server. So it is a better option to go when you can not afford for a dedicated server.

    Thanks!

I would say that the main asset of vps is the pricing and your ability to install applications you need.
Still you have to share resources (RAM, CPU etc) with other sites on the server, so it's essential to avoid bad neighbouring and also it's up to the customer to manage the server unlikely to the shared environment where everything has been taken care of by the provider. The type of support provided by each provider is different.
We are launching vps in a few weeks and we will offer free setup, bandwidth statistics and server monitoring into our support services.

There are various points which has been covered. Most often it might really boil down to the needs of an individual. If somebody does not need many customization then a Shared Hosting is the way to go. If customizations are needs and root/Administrator login is needed then Virtual Server is the way to go.

There some variants in the market which use different technologies to "virtualize". Hyper-V has been in the market for a while now and is coming up quite strong. Hyper-V is a Microsoft Technology.

I would go with a VPS simply because its much easier to move the data over to a dedicated system once you grow out of a VPS

The key differences which set VPS hosting apart from shared hosting are not a factor for those who wish to host a low-to-moderate traffic website and are happy with the level of control offered by a web hosting control panel like cPanel or Plesk. These individuals will prefer Shared Hosting for its perceived simplicity and ease of use: they generally do not have Linux system administration experience and they are not interested in picking up any.

Shared hosting also has the appeal of a bargain for those who are hunting "unlimited" bandwidth and storage space - many providers will make "unlimited" claims, despite the fact that there will always be a practical limit (which, to their eventual disappointment, bargain hunters overlook).

Linux virtual private servers offer the same complement of operating systems and software components which one would expect from a dedicated server. Those with experience administering Linux systems see the benefits in having access to configure their service for uses which extend far beyond e-mail service and web hosting. Individuals who are new to Linux administration often find that a VPS is the best place to start learning without buying their own hardware.

VPS hosting is often considered a step up from shared hosting: when it's time start supporting heavy traffic and custom applications, many will make the switch to VPS hosting after encountering the limitations of the shared hosting infrastructure.

    hope you got the point.
