The HTTP 404 Not Found Error means that the webpage you were trying to reach could not be found on the server. It is a Client-side Error which means that either the page has been removed or moved and the URL was not changed accordingly, or that you typed in the URL incorrectly.

n Error 404 is a client-side error, implying that the error is your mistake, either because you typed the URL in wrong or the page has been moved or removed from the website and you should have known.

The 404 or Not Found error message is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) standard response code, in computer network communications, to indicate that the client was able to communicate with a given server, but the server could not find what was requested.

If the site no longer exists, there's nothing you can do. However, it only takes one mistyped character to result in a 404. See whether the ".htm" should be an ".html" or vice versa. If you're linking from a Web site, you can do a "View source" to make sure it wasn't miscoded. Whether or not it is, you may want to send a note to the Webmaster so that the link can be fixed for the next users.

The 404 or Not Found error message is a HTTP standard response code indicating that the client was able to communicate with a given server, but the server could not find what was requested.
The web site hosting server will typically generate a "404 Not Found" web page when a user attempts to follow a broken or dead link.

404 error message is generated due to one of the below reasons -

    1. Due to incorrect file/directory permission.
    2. Due to missing file.
    3. Due to missing file/directory or contents.
    4. Due to uploading the contents on incorrect path.

You can avoid the 404 error message by setting the proper file/directory permission, uploading the correct contents on correct path.

If you will try to access any page and will get message as 404 as error not found that means the page does not exist. It has been deleted and can not be load now.

Soft 404 error page means when you will try to access any particular website's page/link and you will be redirected to other page instead of 404 error message page.

A 404 error is a common problem and it means that the server (where your files are stored) can’t find your post or page.
There are two methods to fix 404 error in WordPress:
    Update your website permalinks
    Update broken links
