To prevent such attacks, host based intrusion prevention system (HIPS) is implemented. This protects your VPS from brute-force attacks.

If you are facing brute force on common port then it is a better idea to change it to non standard port. Like default RDP port is 3389, you can change it some other port which will make it more secure. Always use strong and uncommon password (you should include lower and upper case with numerical and special symbol with minimum length of 10 characters). You can also setup rule in firewall so that your VPS can be accessed by particular IP(if you have static IP).

the easiest part is to go for Managed services. There are providers like AccuWeb Hosting who provides Fully Managed SSD Windows VPS.

The best thing is to set a strong password, change the default port of your VPS so it becomes difficult for other to attack.
You can even add rules in firewall so that only you can access your VPS(static IP is mandatory),
If you are using a control panel like cPanel/WHM then you can manage firewall and set rules from there.
You can also check out blog as how to secure your cPanel server or go for a managed SSD VPS.

    1. Install a firewall to secure your server. iptables is a good option for firewall. I used VPSrobots to set up iptables.
    2. Don't use root access when making changes on the servers.
    3. Upgrade third party software regularly.
    4. Create a strong password.
    5. Install antivirus software if it is a Windows VPS.
