It is always safe to take back up for your own safety. If any thing happens, you are the one who is going to be in LOSS. If the web hosting company has offered Free Back up you can take the benefit of it. I guess it is your call, whom to rely on your self or others

I agree, there is never a substitute for having a back up of your own data and site. Even when hosts offer a backup solution. Better safe than sorry

Hosting companies do take backup. However, it is always advisable to keep a copy of backups from your side. Some control panels allow you to archive the files and the you can move it over.

Alternately, you can use FTP. If you have a SharePoint Silte then you can use MS SharePoint Designer. Also, in case of Hosted Exchange, you can see if your service provider allows you to connect to Exchange boxes Via POP method. If they do; then keep a copy as PST locally.

Yep - Never rely on your host to have everything backed up. The best solution is your own personal back up, that you know you did. Whether it's simply backing everything up to your own home/office computer, or having another machine/host at another location to back up to.

Most of hosting companies do backup on second disk, on another ftp server. Some of them offer raid type mirroring instead of daily or weekly backups.

Regardless your service provider's solution, keeping a local backup of course is a good idea. Always.

I agree this is good advice. Much like how many web hosts separate their website and customers websites. You can never be too safe.

It's always good to do your own backups, even if they are every so often, such as monthly or weekly. If your service says they are backing up your settings and files, it's a good idea to do a quarterly check and run through the restoration process.
