VPN is more secure than Vlan as data is secure as it goes over internet whereas through vlans you can connect different computers that are not connected with same switch and in same broadcast domain.

VLAN is a subcategory of VPN and VPN is a means of creating a secured network for safe data transmission. A VLAN is basically a means to logically segregate networks without physically segregating them with various switches. A VPN is used to connect two points in a secured and encrypted tunnel.

1.VPN is a method of creating a smaller sub network on top of an existing bigger network while VLAN is a subcategory of VPN
2.A VLAN is used to group computers that are not usually within same geography into the same broadcast domain while VPN is most commonly related to remote access to a company’s network

A virtual private network (VPN) is useful when you wish to create a secure connection between a client and a private network, over the public Internet. For example, a VPN can connect your laptop back to a company network, or it can connect two company offices. Each IP packet to be sent through the VPN connection (often called a tunnel) is encrypted and encapsulated inside another IP packet. This outside IP packet uses the source and destination address of the two end-points of the VPN tunnel, which are usually different than the addresses of the inside IP packet. The encryption makes it more secure than a normal VLAN frame, and the IP addressing makes it more flexible to use across networks, but all this processing takes time, which would slow down internal traffic for which VLANs would suffice. (Encapsulation also reduces the maximum size of the payload, often referred to as "MTU size.")
A virtual LAN (VLAN) is useful when you wish to treat distinct streams of Ethernet traffic differently, without running separate cables. A familiar example might be sharing an office jack between a computer and an IP phone. Distinguishing traffic from payment card equipment (credit card readers) might be another. To make this distinction, the IEEE 802.1Q standard specifies adding an extra field to each Ethernet frame, including a 12-bit VLAN identifier, allowing over 4000 distinct virtual LANs (several values are reserved). Ethernet switches can then use these identifiers to treat traffic differently (for example, block, allow, or prioritize).

A VPN or Virtual Private Network is a method used to add security & privacy to private to private & public network like WiFi hotspot & the internet. VPNs are most often used by corporations to protect sensitive data.

VLAN or Virtual LAN allows the network manager to effectively segment a LAN into diverse broadcast domains and it is not essential for the workstations to be physically located together. Users can be on different floors of the same building or even in different buildings.

A VLAN is a subcategory of VPN and it enjoys the same attributes as the LAN but it allows the end stations to be grouped more easily even if they belong to different network switch. VLAN helps to relocate computers geographically and maintain the same resources and connections like shared folders etc.

A VPN connection reduces the network cost of an organization and removes the need of having leased lines to connect organization’s network in various locations.

Main difference between the VLAN and VPN is here -

    1. VLAN is the computers in the same workstation but located at various places. VPN used to provide the network access to your company.
    2. VPN is used for creating the network for the secure data transmission. VLAN is it's sub-category.
    3. VPN has the encrypted data transmission while VLAN does not have the secure data transmission.

VPN: Virtual Private Network is a method of stimulating a private network which operates on a large network. It is nothing but creating smaller sub networks on the existing bigger networks. The main purpose of this network is to provide secure method for connecting in a private network from network locations.

VLAN: Virtual Local Area Network is a sub category of VPN. A set of hosts that communicate with each other as if they we in same domain even if they are not.

VPN is less risky than Vlan as information is protected as it goes over internet whereas through vlans you can link different machines not linked with same change and in same transmitted sector.

VPN: A virtual private network (VPN) is a private network that is built over a public infrastructure.

VLAN: A virtual local area network (VLAN) is a logical group of workstations, servers and network devices that appear to be on the same LAN despite their geographical distribution.

A VLAN bunches workstations that are not inside similar areas into a similar communicate space and VPN is identified with remote access to the system of an organization.

VLAN is a subcategory of VPN and VPN is a methods for making an anchored system for safe information transmission.

A VLAN is fundamentally a way to coherently isolate systems without physically isolating them with different switches. A VPN is utilized to associate two of every an anchored and scrambled passage.
