UNIX-based hosting is generally seen as being more stable, it also performs faster and can be more secure since most malicious software is written to cause damage to Windows.

Web hosting services work by storing your website files in high-powered computers connected to a very fast network.

Both platform have their own unique features, If you are going to add dynamic content on your site using PHP or CGI scripts and want to interface with a mySQL database, then you should choose UNIX for better compatibility with these applications.UNIX based hosting generally more stable. You will need windows hosting if you are going to develop in .NET or visual basic.

I strongly believe that it will be useful to mention some reliable web hosts here in this thread.

The reliable I know is SolVPS.com - Get started with $5 free credit: Use coupon code WELCOME
Reliability is 100% I honestly cannot remember the last downtime our site has had that wasn't because of something I did.
Pricing is cheap. They will pass on the savings.

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server owned or leased for use by clients, as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for other servers located in their data center, called colocation, also known as Housing in Latin America or France.

Network Solutions offers two main types of operating system platforms on which you may host your Web site: Unix and Windows.

Both platforms have their own unique features, advantages and disadvantages. If you are going to add dynamic content on your site using PHP or CGI scripts and want to interface with a mySQL database, then you should choose UNIX for better compatibility with these applications. However, if you are going to use ASP/Access scripting combinations, ColdFusion, VB scripts or a MS SQL Server database, then choose Windows.

UNIX-based hosting is generally seen as being more stable, it also performs faster and can be more secure since most malicious software is written to cause damage to Windows. However, you will need Windows hosting if you are going to develop in .NET or Visual Basic.

Generally, we recommend our customers use UNIX, unless they need specific features/applications only available on the Windows platform

Note The operating system that you use on your desktop computer is independent of the operating system that you choose to host your Web site on.

The UNIX Operating System is Open Source which means everyone can use it, edit it, and pretty much do what ever you want with it. Adopt new ideas; create hacks and a whole heap more. UNIX is basically community orientated. Without the community backing it, it would probably not be nearly as popular as it is today.

Because UNIX is community oriented, there are many different flavors of UNIX. Mac OS X is a flavor of UNIX.

On the other hand, Windows is not, it was coded and created by Microsoft. People are not able to edit it, or change the code in any way.

The main difference that many people will find is that Windows is purely GUI-based where as UNIX is mostly know for its text-based GUI, however it does have a GUI like windows.
