A firewall is a network security system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both.

A firewall is a network security device that grants or rejects network access to traffic flows between an untrusted zone (e.g., the Internet) and a trusted zone (e.g., a private or corporate network). It can be implemented in both hardware and software, that uses rules to control incoming and outgoing network traffic.

Hardware Firewalls- It can be purchased as astand alone product but are also typically found in broadband routers, and should be considered an importnat part of your system and network setup.

Software Firewalls- It has to be installed on your computer (like any software) and you can customize it; allowing you some control over its function and protection features. A software firewall will protect your computer from outside attempts to control or gain access your computer.

I cant speak on whether or not the firewall offers any seo benefits but I would imagine it would especially if it is caching faster. However Moz has compiled a listing of algorithm updates. I would look at when your rankings started to fall and see if it matches up with the updates and check your backlink profile and do some competitor research to see if anyone is doing anything different.

A firewall is a network security system, either hardware or software-based, that uses rules to control incoming and outgoing network traffic.

A firewall acts as a barrier between a trusted network and and an untrusted network. A firewall controls access to the resources of a network through a positive control model. This means that the only traffic allowed onto the network is defined in the firewall policy; all other traffic is denied.

Firewall is used to define the set of rules for network traffic. It is either software or hardware. It stops the un-trusted traffic. You can define set of rules in your way so you can stop the attacks or hack attempts on your server.

If your servers's bandwidth is utilized by the un-authorized IP addresses then you can block such traffic. You can block the particular port in the firewall so no one can access it.

You have option to allow IP or deny IP in firewall that is either allow those IP addresses to access your network or particular port or disallow them to access them some features on the server. The blocks will be automatically removed after some time as per the rule set in firewall.

Firewall is the best option to secure your server.
