A DNS server is a computer server that contains a database of public IP addresses and their associated hostnames, and in most cases, serves to resolve, or translate, those common names to IP addresses as requested.

DNS servers run special software and communicate with each other using special protocols.

In more easy to understand terms: a DNS server on the internet is the device that translates that www.stubcreator.com you type in your browser to the 146.66.110.159 IP address that it really is.

Each computer on the internet is assigned a unique address called IP address. An IP address is nothing but a string of numbers. It is very difficult to keep in mind the IP address of all the websites we visit daily. Words are easier to remember than string of numbers. This is where domain names come into the picture. When you visit a website, all you need to know is the URL(Uniform Resource Locator). Computers remember numbers and DNS helps us convert the URL into an IP address that the computer can understand.

DNS stands for Domain name system.

It translates domain name(which is easy for human to memorize) to its IP address(used by computers for communication).

    For example:

When you type www."something".com (like Facebook) your request goes to a DNS server form where it will get the IP address and then to Facebook server.

Without DNS server you need to type the IP address of Facebook.

A Domain name server is a computer application that implements a network service for providing responses to queries against a directory service. It translates an often humanly meaningful, text-based identifier to a system-internal, often numeric identification or addressing component.

DNS is a directory of names that match numbers which are IP addresses, which computers use to communicate with each other.

A DNS server stores a database of different domain names, network names, Internet hosts, DNS records and other related data.

The most important function of a DNS server is to translate a domain name into its respective IP address.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. Humans access information online through domain names, like nytimes.com or espn.com. Web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load Internet resources.

Each device connected to the Internet has a unique IP address which other machines use to find the device. DNS servers eliminate the need for humans to memorize IP addresses such as 192.168.1.1 (in IPv4), or more complex newer alphanumeric IP addresses such as 2400:cb00:2048:1::c629:d7a2 (in IPv6)

Definition of: DNS. (Domain Name System) The Internet's system for converting alphabetic names into numeric IP addresses. For example, when a Web address (URL) is typed into a browser, DNS servers return the IP address of the Web server associated with that name.
