SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which is a standard for security technology, encrypted communication between a Web server and a browser. This standard works and ensures that data transfer between the server and the user's browser is private and complete. SSL is also the security standard for millions of websites around the world, which protects data transmitted over secure internet environments.

When you connect to a server using HTTPS, the browser checks the security certificate for this site to see if the above authentication is provided by a trusted unit.

HTTPS (HTTP over SSL or HTTP Secure) is the use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) as a sublayer under regular HTTP application layering. HTTPS encrypts and decrypts user page requests as well as the pages that are returned by the Web server. The use of HTTPS protects against eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks.

HTTPS and SSL support the use of X.509 digital certificates from the server so that, if necessary, a user can authenticate the sender. Unless a different port is specified, HTTPS uses port 443 instead of HTTP port 80 in its interactions with the lower layer, TCP/IP.

This means that when an online shopper is ready to place an order over the Internet, a secure Web page order form will have a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that starts with https://. When the shopper clicks "Place order" his browser's HTTPS layer will encrypt the information on the order form. The acknowledgement the shopper receives back from the vendor's server will also travel in encrypted form and be decrypted by the shopper's browser's HTTPS sublayer.

The HTTPS/SSL update refers to the process of transferring websites from the non-secure 'HTTP' protocol to the secure 'HTTPS' protocol. This migration is performed by installing an SSL Certificate on a website server.

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted.
