These tags are used for allowing or disallowing search engines from crawling your links.

Dofollow links are those links which allow a search engine to follow its path. It means if there is link which takes the user to the target URL but refuses the search engine is not a Dofollow link.

Do-follow links provide better "link juice" for boosting your website up the search engine rankings.No-follow links can often be highly context-relevant and come from sources that are likely to generate greater levels of referral traffic.

    1) What is Do Follow?

When Google bots are crawling a website they look for external links point to other websites. If this links is “do follow” then search engines will follows the link and so link juice gets passed. For eg:

    <a href=http://www.etechdiary.com rel=”dofollow”> Etechdiary </a>

    <a href=http://www.etechdiary.com rel=”external”> Etechdiary </a>

Notice the rel=”dofollow” and rel=”external” in the above code. They define the link as do follow. Also if you do not use rel attribute the link will be treated as ‘dofollow’. These links are important in terms of SEO as they are tracked by search engines and the value (which is called link juice) of the links also gets transferred.

SEO Tip: Try to get more “do follow backlinks” from good sites. Avoid paid backlinks.
    2) What is No Follow?

If a search engine finds a “no follow” backlink it will just ignore the link and will not get deeper into crawling and no link juice is passed. Fo eg:

    <a href=http://www.etechdiary.com rel=”nofollow”> Etechdiary </a>

Notice the “nofollow” attribute in the above code. This defines a code as “nofollow”. So “nofollow” backlinks are not important in terms of search engines as it is not crawled. The comments section mostly have no follow links. But that does not mean that these links are useless. You can still get some quality traffic from these also

No follow links have many advantages and should be used on the website when we want to tell the search engines which pages or links are not important and should not be followed. Links from authority sites like Wikipedia and other similar, although no follow can bring value to your site. For example, you can get valuable visitors and constant traffic to your site.

An important note though in case you are focusing only on dofollow vs nofollow in building a back link campaign, these aren't the only things to focus on.

Page Rank of the page in question is important, but equally important is the "trust" or authority of a webpage. Ideally you want to get back links from a page that is trusted, allows dofollow links, and has a Page Rank between 9-1.

To find the Page Rank of a site just do a google search. To find the Trust flow of a site use the Free tool from Majestic SEO. It even has a plugin for Chrome so you can look at a page you are on. Lastly to find if a page or site allows dofollow links if you use Chrome just right click, view source, and navigate to one of the outbound links.

If you are asking for your own site, I always use no-follow to external sites unless its one that has returned a do-follow link to me and it won't hurt my site by doing so.
