Google Panda, Penguin, Pigeon, Hummingbird all of this are google Algorithm which Google releases after a certain duration.

Google Panda algorithm was based on content. Sites that had thin or shallow content or Content that was of low quality were penalized due to this algorithm.

Google Penguin was more of focussed on Links: i.e sites that involved themselves in link exchanges, link farms, link buying were penalized because of this algorithm

Google Hummingbird: Google Hummingbird was a contextual algorithm which focussed more on the meaning and context of the search query.

Hummingbird is about synonyms but also about context. Google always had synonyms, but with Hummingbird it is also able to judge context - thereby judging the intent of a person carrying out a search, to determine what they are trying to find out.
