Hummingbird is such a subtle update that no one noticed it before Google announced it had shipped a month earlier.

The main thing Hummingbird does is handle queries phrased as questions in a sensible fashion. SEOs have been owning Google for years on queries of this type. It's likely that question-focused content will now rank lower than traditional content.

Better focusing on meaning behind the word. That is Google said that Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query.

HI

Google Hummingbird algorithm update is all about improving results for "conversational search", making the search engine much better at answering specific user questions, rather than just picking certain keywords within a query..

It is more substantial than it was earlier, since keeping a focus on long tail keywords and phrases will not do the justice to your SEO plan.

Hummingbird is about synonyms but also about context. Google always had synonyms, but with Hummingbird it is also able to judge context - thereby judging the intent of a person carrying out a search, to determine what they are trying to find out.
