The page of a Web site that the user sees first before being given the option to continue to the main content of the site. Splash pages are used to promote a company, service or product or are used to inform the user of what kind of software or browser is necessary in order to view the rest of the site's pages.

It is the page which used to promote your website when someone visits your website. Before loading the homepage, splash page used to load. Those pages are also used to inform, which software is necessary for loading your website. Splash pages will have the direct redirection link to your website or you will have to click on particular button for redirecting to your website.

A splash page (or splash screen) is:

1) An initial Web site page used to capture the user's attention for a short time as a promotion or lead-in to the site home page or to tell the user what kind of browser and other software they need to view the site.

To have the splash page automatically move to the home page after a specified delay, include the HTML tag in the splash page as in this example with a 10-second delay:

< META http-equiv="refresh" content="10; URL=http://www.somesitename.com/home.html" >

The advantage of a splash page is that you can create effects or provide information that is only needed once a visit. For example, a user can keep coming back to the home page without having to be bothered with browser requirements.

2) Some sites use "splash page" to mean the home page itself, especially where it contains attention-capturing visual or multimedia effects (creating a "splash").

Splash pages are usually graphic-intensive pages that appear before the main home page. Some feature standard graphic format such as GIF and JPEG

Splash pages have evolved over the years to provide a better user experience for visitors and serve as a teaser for your website or any content page. The page offers visitors very little information or a promotion that optimizes their experience on your website.
