Google Alerts is basically an internet monitoring tools that sends you alerts whenever a predefined keyword is mentioned somwhere on the web.

The thing is, the notifications usually have major delays and the time from when a given mention appeared on the web to sending a notification to a user is too long I am afraid. From my own experience I know that Google Alerts misses out on a lot of results, too.

It’s not as advanced as dedicated media monitoring tools but I come across people every now and then who mention Google Alerts as their go-to social listening tool, even though it’s not so great compared to the market leaders at this point.

There are quite a lot alternatives to have a look at if you’re expecting quality social listening results. Personally, I’d suggest having a look at Brand24.

It allows for tracking keyword mentions across different digital media, including social media and blogs, news sites, message boards and forums etc.

Once the monitoring project is created, the tool starts picking up all mentions containing the chosen keywords and delivers the results to a user.

Not only will it collect mentions for you but also compliment it with a number of different metrics that can be crucial for you as far as your reputation is concerned. That includes:

number of mentions
social media reach
number of likes, shares and comments
influencer score
and sentiment filter
Each of them will help you evaluate which mentions you should reply to in the first place because of the reach a negative tweet or a message or any other social media could potentially have, or the influnce an author has on his or her audience.

Not to overwhelm you with too much information, I just wanted to add that that Brand24 is just one of the social media monitoring that you can try as a replacement for Google Alerts and there are many more that you could test to see which one is best for your needs.
