A web crawler also known as a web spider or web robot is a program which browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner. Other less frequently used names for web crawlers are ants, automatic indexers, bots, and worms.
This process is called web crawling or spidering. Search engine indexing collects, parses, and stores data to facilitate fast and accurate information retrieval. An alternate name for the process in the context of search engines is Web indexing

Indexed basically means its been picked up by search engines, if a site or article hasn't been indexed then no one will find it through the search engines..other hand Crawling process is a final process of through which Google gives final results for your website or blog. This is a process execute by search engine spiders when searching for relevant websites on the internet.

SEO can be boiled down to three core elements, or functions, in the current era of Google: crawling time (discovery), indexation time (which also includes filtering), and ranking time (algorithmic).Googlebot (or any search engine spider) crawls the web to process information.

What Is The Difference Between Crawling and Indexing? ... One perfect example of terms that are incorrectly used synonymously is Crawling and Indexing. Whether the writer understands the difference or not, in many SEO articles it leads the reader to believe the two words mean the same thing. They most definitely do not.

In SEO, crawling is defined as when the web crawler visits and crawls your website after submission of sitemap and indexing is when the web crawler crawls and reads your website and then saves it in its own index to make it visible on search engine.
