Canonical Url is used to deal with Duplicate Content. The problem with many sites is that they have pages that are identical or nearly identical. This can happen when your site has many categories, paths, and dynamic data.

A canonical URL allows you to tell search engines that certain similar URLs are actually one and the same. Sometimes you have products or content that is accessible under multiple URLs, or even on multiple websites. Using a canonical URL (an HTML link tag with attribute rel=canonical) these can exist without harming your rankings.

Canonical URL is an important term that every blogger should be aware of. Even if you have heard or not, you should know what role Canonical URL plays in the optimization of a website. I have referred to it multiple times in my previous articles. While doing SEO, we need to check both On Page SEO and Off Page SEO. But if you are not doing your On Page SEO properly, you will not get the good results, no matter if you are performing Off Page SEO well. So today, I thought to write an article on URL Canonicalization (Canonical URL) which is a part of On Page SEO.

Canonical Urls are on the page and define which url the page should be indexed as. This is used when you have one or more url parameters that might resolve that same content.

A canonical link element is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues by specifying the "canonical" or "preferred" version of a web page as part of search engine optimization.

From an SEO point of view here is the definition of a canonical URL: Canonical URL: the search engine friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as authoritative. In other words, a canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see. Quite often canonical URLs were used to describe the homepage.
